Friday 2/17 What You Should Watch

A Gifted Man moves to 9pm tonight, it will remain in this time slot thru March when it completes it’s first season. Odds are it won’t be renewed, if it is, look for a big changes.  I guess the season ending cliffhanger will have something to do with Kate leaving her husband and ending up on Michael’s doorstep.

Last week on Fringe they dropped a bombshell, amber Olivia has the memories of Peter’s Olivia. I suspect they were injected by the mystery men we saw a few episodes back.  The plot of last week’s episode centered around blending alt-universes together. Are we headed that way this season, if we are will Walter find the safe zone to prevent total destruction?  The observer told Olivia she was going to die, last years season finale had Alt-Olivia dying, this year I think this Olivia has to die so Peter can get home. Now that AMber Olivia has other Olivia’s memories she and Peter will grow close, and her death will be bitter-sweet as Peter goes home with the memories of the Amberverse. But will Olivia be alive when he gets there?

Blue Bloods and Supernatural are also new tonight.

Fringe

As the team investigates a mentally ill patient who seems to be connected to a series of murders, frightening clues and connections lead Olivia to a shocking conclusion.

A Gifted Man

The doctors team up to search for a common link when a spoiled pop star (Christina Milian) and a young girl both seek treatment for unusual symptoms.
 

Supernatural

Episode: Repo Man
Sam and Dean return to a small town where a demon they exorcised four years ago has returned; a psych ward patient recounts his memories of being possessed.
 

Blue Bloods

Episode: Parenthood
When a man’s family is beaten and robbed in front of him, the Regans debate how far they would go to protect the ones they love; Frank feels conflicted when a college student is arrested at a rally

Chuck is new tonight, I watched the first season, but couldn’t hang in there, I know it has a loyal following. Just like the folks that don’t get my rabid devotion to Fringe, I don’t get the Chuck-sters.

Blue Bloods “Thanksgiving”

Blue Bloods Thanksgiving episode last night on CBS at 10pm, demonstrated why I love this show so much. It showcased the closeness and love of the Reagan family.

We also had terror threats, cause nothing says Thanksgiving like blowing up the Lincoln Tunnel, art thieves, I knew Jacob wasn’t long for this world and gambling debts. 

I don’t know how Frank (Tom Selleck) does it, I get a little stress and need an Ativan, but somehow he manages a terror threat and his Dad’s heart attack and bypass surgery like any other day.  Tom Selleck has gone from sex symbol in the 80′s as Magnum P.I., to everyone’s favorite TV Dad, steady and solid as a rock.

When Frank gets to the hospital and sees Henry (Len Cariou) for the first time, Henry says. “what about Thanksgiving”. Now that is dedication to your turkey, and it made me laugh because my Grammy would have done the same thing. She made every holiday a feast, and cooked for days to get ready.

Erin finally meets a nice guy Jacob, played by an actor, Frederick Weller that I actually like, he is under investigation for being an art thief.   There is a twist, he is stealing back art that was stolen by the Nazi’s during WW2 and returning it to the rightful owners. Modern day Robin Hood, unfortunately that won’t stop the NYPD from arresting him.  Maybe he will get away, but not before he and Erin grow closer and a they have a romantic roll in the hay.

Other sub-plots, Danny and Jackie are investigating a murder and Renzulli’s got a gambling problem.  Jamie (Will Estes), told his dad, he didn’t name any names, but Frank figured it out anyway.  Frank meets with Renzulli and in a subtle way lets him know he knows, and he has a chance to clean up his mess, but let him know this was it, if he messed up again he was done.  Which pretty much means the end for Renzulli.

In the end Henry’s surgery is a success and the Reagan’s have Thanksgiving at the hospital. Even though I didn’t get my traditional Regan family scene in their dining room I will take that moment anywhere I can get it.

Friday Night Round Up – Blue Bloods, Grimm and Fringe

I watched Grimm, Fringe and Blue Bloodson Friday night.

First up Fringe, the heart of the show is back, Walter and Peter are back together. But the reunion is bittersweet, Walter doesn’t remember who Peter is, my heartbreak for both of these characters. Walter and Peter is perhaps the best father son relationship on TV.

The last scene between Walter and Peter brought it all home, Peter encouraging Walter, telling him he knows what he is capable of, that support and love that we saw in seasons 1-3.  Walter taking Pater’s face in his hands, still racked with guilt over the boy who died 25 years ago, believing he doesn’t deserve this second chance.  The last shot of Peter alone and abandoned.

Wins, Lincoln, the typewriter and the introduction of time slips. 

Grimm, this week is a variation on Goldilocks. I like this show, but I am hesitant to get to attached.  The ratings were solid and if it holds NBC could pick it up. But I wouldn’t be surprised it it made its way to the Syfy channel for season 2. 

Blue Bloods, so glad my BF and parents go me hooked on this show. This is a text book example of how to execute a TV show.

  • strong story telling – check
  • liakble characters that you care about -check
  • no gimmicks – check
  • sold family values – check

Consistency in the action and progression of story from week to week.  My favorite part of every episode is the Reagan family dinner, I feel cheated if their isn’t one.  

Just a few random thoughts on what I watched last night.

Friday – Schedule Change

By now I am sure you have heard the news, Fringe is not on because of the World Series and CBS is running repeats of all its shows.

What can you watch?

Grimm premieres tonight at 9pm on NBC

I have seen the pilot and I highly recommend this show.

It’s Friday – The Top Spot goes to Fringe. Fox 9pm ( as long as there is no baseball)

Be still my heart Peter (Joshua Jackson) is back, I can’t wait for the first scene with him and Walter (John Noble).

 

If the World Series preempts Fringe then I will check out Grimm it premieres tonight. I got to see the pilot a few weeks ago, this is definitely going to be on the DVR.

I havent’ watched broadcast TV on Saturday nights since ABC cancelled the greatest Saturday night line up, The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.  Who knew Lauren Tewes was a cokehead, Gopher would grow up to be senator and Ricardo Montalban was the orignal world’s most interesting man.  Khan!!!!!!!

I watch cable, HBO, Cinemax and Starz always première a new movie on Saturday, odds are I have already seen it, but I still check it out.

A little TV news

Friday night ratings.

  • Ratings are defined as the estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.  
  • Share (of Audience) is defined as the percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

For example, last night’s Blue Bloods had a 1.7% rating with a 5% share, for the adults 18-49 demo. That means 1.7% of TVs were tuned to Blue Bloods, 5% is the number of people (not homes) were watching.  Even though they had 10 million viewers,  ABC’s 20/20 still won the time slot because they had a 2.1 ratings and a share of 6, but only 7.6 million viewers. 

The key demographic, is adults 18-49, this is the demo that advertisers like the most because that demo is more likely to be swayed by advertisers and spend money. If you want to attract top advertisers and get them to buy ad time, you want your show to score with that group.

When you look at how one of your favorite shows is doing, and you are trying to determine if it will be cancelled keep the Adults 18-49 demo number in the forefront of your mind.  TV By The Numbers has the full breakdown for last night.
